Logically, newly used lights rarely have problems not turning on, but this phenomenon is not uncommon. Why? Excluding wiring issues in the electrical environment, it may be due to poor quality of the light fixture itself. Consumers can judge the quality of the light fixture based on the following aspects, avoiding short light fixture lifespan issues from the source.
Power Driver
The LED power supply, also called a driver, mainly provides a constant voltage and constant current source for the LED lamp beads. Using a constant current method avoids exceeding the maximum rated value of the drive current, ensuring the LED light reaches the expected brightness and color temperature requirements. Stable constant current input and output more effectively extends the service life of the light fixture.
Especially when dimming is needed, it is difficult to maintain consistent light brightness. A small increase in voltage will cause the current to increase exponentially. If adjusted improperly, it may sometimes damage the LED light fixture. In addition, thermal runaway, where heat generated internally or externally in the constant current circuit causes a bias, reducing the forward resistance (lowering the voltage difference) and increasing the current through the device, is less likely to occur, improving the reliability of the LED light fixture during long-term operation.
Poor quality drivers offer virtually no protection against surges and voltage fluctuations, causing the lamp beads to operate under extreme conditions. The light fixture may dim, flicker, or even fail to light up shortly after use, and in more serious cases, there is a safety risk of board failure.
Lamp Beads
Lamp beads are the LED chips, like the brain of the light fixture. Some chips use new conversion technology to produce ultra-thin conversion layers, allowing them to withstand higher junction temperatures and have longer heat dissipation. Because LEDs generate continuous heat during operation, if this heat cannot be quickly dissipated, the LED lamp beads will experience rapid light decay at high temperatures, significantly shortening their lifespan.
The LED industry has a lifespan certification called LM80, guaranteeing that the brightness of the lamp beads will not decrease by more than 30% within 33,000 hours. If you use it for 5 hours a day, that's about 20 years, which is completely sufficient. Therefore, high-quality lamp beads will result in a longer lifespan for the light fixture.
Heat Dissipation Structure and Process
The heat dissipation of the light fixture directly affects the lifespan of the lamp beads. The heat dissipation of the hot air flow forms a high-speed cycle with air convection, ensuring the most stable operating state of the light fixture.
The heat source of LED lighting comes mainly from two parts: the light source and the power supply. For the light source part, the effective contact area between the light source PCB and the heat sink should be considered. The larger the effective contact area, the better the heat dissipation. In addition, the heat conduction interface between different media should be as smooth as possible. The thermal conductive materials must be tightly bonded, and the gaps between the mating parts should be as small and few as possible.
The natural convection heat dissipation method of LED light fixtures also requires an effective heat dissipation area. Therefore, in general, appropriately roughening the outer wall of the heat sink can increase the effective heat exchange area. In addition, when spraying different colored paints, the spraying thickness and the thermal conductivity and thermal radiation performance of the paint should be considered.
